SPC/DevFish2 supports the Pacific tuna industry

pitiaThe SPC/DevFish2 project provided fiscal funding of USD 44,000 in August 2013 to support the Pacific Islands Tuna Industry Association (PITIA) work programme for the next 12 months.

PITIA has played a crucial role in representing Pacific Island tuna industries. The programme has engaged in regional and international consultative processes to ensure that the interests and inputs of the private sector, as key stakeholders in industry development and resources management in the Pacific region, are taken into account.

Since its inception in the early 2000s, PITIA has offered strategic representation in regional tuna fisheries forums, such as the Forum Fisheries Agency and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, as well as other relevant industry and economic forums in the region.

PITIA Executive Officer, Naitilima Tupou, commented, ‘The support from SPC/DevFish is very much appreciated and certainly essential to support the role that PITIA plays. Industry can and should play a role in the consultative process on policies to enhance those that are conducive and encourage sustainable development.’

PITIA is the regional secretariat of the Pacific Islands tuna industry sectors, representing from the 12 ACP-Pacific countries. Its members are national associations.

One focus area of the SPC/DevFish2 project is facilitating assistance to improve transparency in systems and procedures. Key activities include ‘strengthening industry association and artisanal fishers’ representation in consultative and dialogue processes between all relevant and necessary stakeholders at national and regional level on policies and development matters’.

SPC/DevFish2 support to PITIA will contribute and enhance their role in regional/national linkage and strategies in this area.
